The Complete 2026 Guide to Performing Umrah: Step-by-Step Rules & Practical Tips

Performing the sacred pilgrimage of Umrah is one of the most spiritually rewarding journeys in a Muslim's lifetime. Whether it is your very first pilgrimage or you are returning with elderly parents, meticulous preparation ensures your focus remains purely on Ibadah.

1. Preparation & Entering the State of Ihram

Before crossing the designated Miqat (e.g., Yalamlam for flights arriving via Jeddah from Pakistan), pilgrims must enter the sacred state of Ihram:

  • Ghusl & Grooming: Perform physical purification, trim nails, and apply fragrance to the body (not on Ihram sheets).
  • The Garments: Men wear two unstitched white seamless cloths (Izar and Rida) with sandals that leave the ankle and upper foot bone exposed. Women wear modest, loose-fitting attire with hair covered, avoiding face veils (Niqab) and hand gloves.
  • Niyyah & Talbiyah: Make the formal intention: "Labbayka Allahumma Umrah" and recite the Talbiyah continuously:
*Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka Laa Shareeka Laka Labbayk. Innal-Hamda Wan-Ni'mata Laka Wal-Mulk, Laa Shareeka Lak.*

2. Arrival in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

Upon checking in at your hotel (preferably within walking distance of the Haram), proceed to Masjid Al-Haram:

  • Enter through Bab As-Salam or any available gate leading to the Mataf.
  • Supplicate upon seeing the Holy Kaaba for the first time, as prayers made at this moment are deeply answered.

3. Tawaaf Al-Umrah (7 Circuits Around the Kaaba)

  • Men perform Idtiba'a (uncovering the right shoulder) and Raml (brisk pace during the first three circuits).
  • Begin each circuit at the Hajar Al-Aswad (Black Stone) line, raising your right hand saying "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar".
  • Between Rukn Al-Yamani and Hajar Al-Aswad, recite:
*Rabbana aatina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-aakhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-naar.*
  • After completing 7 circuits, cover your shoulder and pray two Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (or anywhere in the Haram), followed by drinking blessed Zamzam water.

4. Sa'i (Walking Between Safa & Marwah)

  • Ascend the hill of Safa, face the Kaaba, and glorify Allah with Takbir.
  • Walk 7 laps between Safa and Marwah (ending at Marwah). Men run lightly between the two green light pillars.
  • Supplicate with heartfelt Duas throughout each lap.

5. Halq or Taqseer (Exiting Ihram)

  • Men: Shaving the entire head (Halq) is highly favored, or cutting hair equally from all sides (Taqseer).
  • Women: Cut approximately one fingertip length (approx. 1 inch) from the end of their hair.
  • With this, your Umrah is officially complete, and all Ihram restrictions are lifted.

Practical Advice for Pakistani Pilgrims

  • Nusuk App Appointments: Ensure you book your Rawdah Sharif permit well in advance via the official Nusuk application.
  • Elderly Assistance: Wheelchair attendants and electric carts are readily accessible on the Mezzanine floors of the Mataf and Masa'a.
  • Haramain Bullet Train: Book executive seats between Makkah and Madinah for a smooth, air-conditioned 2-hour transit.
